# Flair expands into wooden-pencil manufacturing in Surat

[Flair](https://flairworld.in/?ref=news.knockology.com) Writing Industries is expanding its pencil business beyond mechanical pencils, announcing that its wooden-pencil manufacturing facility in Surat has become operational. The Indian company’s **June 12 release** also reports approximately **147 million mechanical-pencil pieces in sales**.

That is a substantial category disclosure, but its period needs care. The release discusses FY2025–26 without clearly defining the interval represented by the 147 million units. It is a company-reported total, not a figure we can safely convert into an annual sales rate or daily output.

## Two parts of a category strategy

Flair presents the Surat opening as a way to extend its position from mechanical pencils into the larger wooden-pencil category. Those are related commercial ambitions, but different products and production requirements.

Its Q4/FY26 investor presentation, [filed with the stock exchange on May 21](https://nsearchives.nseindia.com/corporate/flair2016%5F21052026225543%5FBSE%5FNSE%5Fannouncement%5Finvestor%5Fpresentation%5FQ4.pdf?ref=news.knockology.com), adds detail about the Surat site: **₹20 crore in FY26 capital expenditure**, including **₹8.3 crore for a new building**. In millions of rupees, those amounts are ₹200 million and ₹83 million. The building cost is included in the total.

The two announcements describe different milestones. By June 12, Flair says wooden-pencil manufacturing is operational; the earlier presentation still treats the additional building as a planned Q1 FY27 start. Neither assigns the site’s entire ₹20 crore investment to mechanical-pencil production.

For a market often covered one product at a time, this is a different view of expansion: an established writing-instrument company using pencil demand to build a broader manufacturing business.
