[Kokuyo](https://www.kokuyo.com/?ref=news.knockology.com) is launching **Campus** [**Magic Fit**](https://prtimes.jp/story/detail/ZrNKy2TwlNb?ref=news.knockology.com) in Japan at **¥450 before tax**, bringing a grip with six internal air pockets to **0.3, 0.5 and 0.7 mm** mechanical pencils. Release is set for September 16, with shop arrivals varying.

The cavities are arranged in a hexagon inside a round grip. Kokuyo says they compress under the fingers, combining the softer contact of a round barrel with the steadier hold of a hexagonal one. The interesting engineering is hidden just beneath the surface.

## Two weeks to find a better grip

In [Kokuyo’s development account](https://prtimes.jp/story/detail/ZrNKy2TwlNb?ref=news.knockology.com), the first approach relied on surface texture. An internal review challenged whether that really answered students’ difficulty writing neatly at speed. With two weeks before the next test, the team shifted its attention to the inside of the grip.

The six-cavity design solved one problem and created another. A very soft material with internal voids was difficult to release from the mold, causing manufacturing defects. The developers describe months of work across mold treatment, material blending and the molding process before they could put it into production.

## A pencil—and a Campus expansion

Magic Fit also has a slim metal point and a twist-out long eraser. The pencil comes in ten body-color and lead-size combinations. Replacement erasers are listed at **¥120 before tax**.

Kokuyo is launching gel pens alongside the pencils and describes the move as Campus entering writing instruments in earnest. It follows the notebook brand’s September 2025 repositioning around students’ wider study needs.

The handwriting claim needs its context. Kokuyo reports a subjective evaluation of **111 Japanese middle- and high-school students**; **56%** said their fast writing with the pencil approached their carefully written characters. The release gives **p<0.10**. That is a manufacturer-reported result, not independent proof that the grip improves everyone’s handwriting.

The launch puts a specific manufacturing problem inside an inexpensive everyday pencil. Whether the grip suits a particular hand still comes down to using it.
