Platinum is giving its adjustable PRO-USE 171 drafting pencil a softer finish. Silky White and Silky Pink limited editions arrive in Japan on October 28, 2026, priced at ¥4,180 including tax.
The September 28 announcement pairs pearl-resin barrels and a special matte coating with pink-gold details. Platinum pitches the colors for everyday writing and business settings as well as the pencil’s technical uses.
The finish changes; the controls stay
The 171 retains two separate adjustments. Turning the nose changes the exposed guide-pipe length, accommodating different ruler thicknesses or distances between the grip and paper. Holding the grip and turning the body switches the cushioning mechanism on or off.
The distinction matters when comparing it with a simpler drafting pencil: pipe adjustment changes the front-end geometry, while the cushioning setting changes whether the mechanism yields under writing pressure. The limited colors bring those existing controls to a different-looking barrel.
Both versions use 0.5 mm lead. Under model MSDA-3800B, Platinum lists a length of 144.5 mm, maximum diameter of 10 mm and standard weight of 24.5 g.
Platinum calls the edition limited but gives no production quantity in the announcement. October 28 is the Japanese release date; the notice does not specify overseas timing.
